Some
say
that
Northumberland
is
the most tranquil county in the UK. The
scenery is spectacular, the moors and the hills, as well as the
beautiful coastline. There is so much to see and do! If you wish to discover a landscape of limitless beauty and a warm and sincere welcome, then Northumberland National Park will provide an experience you will not want to forget. From exploring the World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall in the south to striding through the grandeur of the Cheviot Hills in the north, there is so much to experience. Through its heart run the majestic rivers of the North Tyne, Rede and Coquet where otters play, salmon leap and fishermen daydream. This is also a rugged borderland, where you are reminded of its violent Reiver past by the castles and fortified farms (bastles) that pepper this landscape. There are areas of outstanding natural beauty at the North Pennines and Northumberland Coast including a 40-mile stretch of Heritage Coast between Berwick and Amble. Visit Holy Island and explore the Castle, Priory and Heritage Centre. In the Heritage Centre, you can ‘turn the pages’ (via a computer screen) of the brilliantly illuminated 7th Century Lindisfarne Gospels, which have been described as the most beautiful illuminated manuscript in the world. Don’t forget to leave time to go puffin (May, June, July) and seal spotting around the Farne Islands! |
